Fifteen years ago, Rob Nestor and Bill Reynolds discovered what could become a masterpiece in their creative endeavors. “We had been searching for two years before we found River Road Farm and since the first time we traveled, she just spoke to us. I think we both knew right away that we had found the house.” Please join me and Susanna for a behind-the-scenes visit with Rob and Bill at their historic Connecticut home and garden.
The home is located in the charming village of Hadlyme, CT, on a country lane, a stone’s throw from the Connecticut River. One of the most attractive aspects of the property to Rob and Bell was that, unlike many antique New England homes, it was kept out of the way.
Starting on an 11-acre empty lot, Rob, armed with a horticultural degree and a landscaping company in Atlanta, and Bill, who came from a family of enthusiastic gardeners, gradually transformed the property into a lush and green garden paradise.
For the first decade or so, they were back and forth from Atlanta, with only short visits at River Road Farm. They gradually instilled, and each time they return with new eyes and new ideas. Rob and Bill designed, installed and maintained everything themselves so that was always a priority in mind as they continued to plant and modify the gardens.
Their love of old homes inspired the duo to renovate their farmhouse only modestly with delicate additions respecting the original structure and its past, and as passionate collectors, they easily found everything fit in, both inside and out, as they were always meant to be there.
As Rob and Bell have continued to update the garden with the New England seasons in mind, they have added several outbuildings, the last one far from the main house, with no electricity, as they like to entertain in the warm months.
So thanks to Rob and Bill for welcoming us to River Road Farm! You are an inspiring source of endless creativity!
