There is great concern that going back to school today after the Easter holidays will lead to a spike in cases. Covid-19 is still waning in Israel, but today reopening schools after the Easter holidays presents a new challenge. On Sunday, only 195 new cases of COVID-19 were found, out of 33,000 tests yesterday, with a positive rate of 0.6%. There are currently only 5,232 active Covid cases in Israel and not a single Israeli township that is now identified as “red”. There are 323 critically ill patients hospitalized with Covid, down from 405 last week. The only negative development is the R (base reproduction number), which increased to 0.7 from 0.53 last week. The highly successful Israeli vaccination process, responsible for the rapid disappearance of the virus, is now slowing down. 5.27 million Israelis were vaccinated, of whom 4.85 million took two doses of Pfizer, according to the Ministry of Health. 87% were vaccinated over 50 years old, 70% over 20 years old, and 50% were 16-19 years old. 40% of the recent new cases in Israel are of people 19 years of age or younger. Since children under 16 years old are not eligible for vaccination, there is great concern that returning to school today after the Easter holidays will lead to a spike in the number of cases. Classes continue in small groups or capsules and the situation is carefully monitored by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education.
