What is in the shirt? For Russia and Ukraine, it is decades of history, memory and political conflict. Earlier this week, Russian football officials filed a complaint with UEFA authorities after Ukraine revealed its tournament jersey, which depicts a map of the country and the slogans “Glory to Ukraine!” and “Glory to the heroes!” Russians were alarmed by the nationalist chant, as well as a map of Crimea – the peninsula territory unilaterally annexed by Russia in 2014 – and said the use of such “political motives” violated UEFA regulations.
