Director of the Brighton women’s team, Hope Powell, became the first woman to win the Best Performer award from the Association of Directors of the League, as the former England coach was honored with a 2-1 win over women’s Premier League champions and leaders Chelsea on Sunday. Goals of Eileen Whelan and Megan Connolly ended Chelsea’s unbeaten record of 33 league matches two years ago, the first season in which WSL League performance was considered for the award, and the LMA committee included Howard Wilkinson and Sir Alex Ferguson Joe Royal, Dave Bassett, Barry Fry, Paul Ince and Rachel Yankee. “I am delighted to accept this reward on my behalf, on behalf of the staff and the players,” Powell said. “Overcoming a strong team like Chelsea was due to the hard work, organization and team spirit and it is good that our achievement was recognized by a panel of experienced referees from LMA.” It was a real team effort. We regrouped after some disappointing results and everyone’s attitude and effort were great. And I was really pleased we followed it up with another win on Wednesday at West Ham. Saturday February 13 at 7:45 pm Kick-off 8:00 pm Graham Potter won the award last week after Brighton beat Liverpool 1-0 in the Premier League. This was Norse’s first league victory at Anfield since 1982.
