- Cherry: You can either fresh or frozen sour cherries.

- Corn Starch: This is used to thicken the drink.
- Almond extract: I love the taste that this little addition brings to this recipe!

- sterilization: You will want to sterilize the jars in boiling water. Next, put it in a warm oven at 215 degrees while making the filling. Make sure they are in the oven for at least 15 minutes.
- moving: Add the cherries, sugar, and cornstarch to a medium saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat until sugar dissolves and thickens, stirring constantly. Once it thickens, remove from heat and add almond extract, lemon juice and butter. If you want a brighter red filling, feel free to add red food coloring until it reaches your desired level of red.

- Cherry picking: In this recipe, I used fresh cherries, but you can use frozen sour cherries if you’d like. You can also use sweet cherries, but sugar should be reduced to ½ cup and ½ cup.

- Red food coloring: You don’t have to use any food coloring but if you want it to look more vibrant you can use some! I used it when making this because I wanted the pie filling to look more like the traditional red cherry pie filling we’re used to!
How to store cherry pie filling
Having jars of cherry pie filling on hand means whisking cherry pie filling together without the stress of making a filling and the benefit of not having to use store-bought!
- on the shelf: Unopened filling jars can be stored on the shelf in your pantry or another cool, dark location for up to 3 years. Be sure to label the jar with the date and contents.
- In the refrigerator: Once the filling jar is opened, you can store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to a week.
