My sister Fei introduced me to her friend Shalin Bean about a year ago and I felt interested in her and how she was made. NoSH BoDY. Shalin grew up in a very spiritual home and with a Native American mom who was all about holistic wellness. She is very interested in oriental medicine, but her husband is a plastic surgeon and works in Western medicine a lot. This is so interesting to me!
Anyway, I started using her products a lot when I got pregnant because they are all natural. She is the founder NoSH BoDY Natural, Organic, Earth-Friendly, Sustainable, Baby-Safe and Doctor-Certified.
Among all her products is my favorite Oat apricot balsam, But I also love Lather baby soap.
Anyway, Shalin was on the blog before, but today she is back telling us all about DIY kombucha. Shalin will explain everything step by step and divide it to make it easy for us. I mean, it’s easy – I did!
Let’s welcome Shaleen Payne of NoSH BoDY again Skinny secrecy…
♡♡♡
I recently had dinner with the family of my best friend Faye and brought some Scobies for her and her sister, Lauren. These weird looking things sparked a lot of laughter and cool jokes because they are so strange to most people. But what most people don’t know is that you need to have this in your life.
WTF is Skopje?
For those of you scratching their heads saying what the heck is Scooby, he lives symbiotic Culture from BBacterium and sThe East can make some delicious drinks that help cleanse the body and intestines, boost wellness and overall health, aid in weight loss and keep your body under control.
Fermentation is a chemical process in which carbohydrates (like sugar or starch) are converted into alcohol or acid, but when done correctly, it won’t make you drink vinegar or get drunk.
There are a million different ways to make kombucha & jun (which is like kombucha but with green tea and honey) but I use the simple method and it makes a great drink that even my 7 year old loves!
Kombucha is rich in antioxidants, vitamin B and folic acids, and has been around since 220 BC in China. This is not a “here today, go tomorrow” fad. It is a long-term and generation-making process.
I love sharing this with my children and that they go through wonderful ways in which they can take care of themselves and others especially when it comes to the gut. This is where a lot happens in the body. If you have poor gut health, it can be very difficult for your body to be in balance and in coordination.
How to make your own kombucha
How do I start my kombucha & jun making process is that I have a clean and empty file 1 gallon jar Make 8 cups of fresh tea. If you use tea bags, use about 8 bags.
Soak it in boiling water for 10 minutes until you get a nice color of tea, then add one cup of sweetener while it is still hot. I do all of this in my jar, unless I’m using a coil The French Press To make tea. In this case, I’ll only add about 6-8 cups of freshly pressed French tea into a gallon glass bowl and add 1 cup of my sweetener, (whichever coordinates with the type of tea you’re making – * kombucha sugar, raw honey for June *).
Add distilled or purified water to the jar leaving enough room to add your own Scooby (I’ll get to the Scooby details below) and two cups of tea from an old batch of made or already existing tea. This is your “starter tea” that helps get kombucha or john. In the fermentation process. This gives your tea a boost in the process.
To make my kombucha & jun it’s almost the same process. Kombucha is black tea, sugar, green tea and honey. There are different SCOBYies for each but I changed SCOBY’s gender before and it’s not a very difficult process.
Now let’s talk about your very first Skopje
The last resort is that you can make some by pouring a bottle of store-bought kombucha into your starter tea and you should make Scooby. In the end, a good Scooby will produce your very own. If he didn’t make one, it wouldn’t be a real kombucha.
People always tell me they don’t like kombucha or jun because they got it from a bottle that was just the thing in the store and they always like fresh kombucha & jun. Yes, there is a huge difference between home made and store bought products!
So after you have a new kombucha (SCOBY) baby, take this baby and use it in your day (green tea and honey drink). After a few batches, the gender change will be complete and you can use it in June. Although it does change the gender, it is still very good and can be used. Unless you are an expert in kombucha, you will never know the taste difference.
Once you make scoops with the new genus, you will need to house them separately – one for kombucha and one for leon.
Once you have set up your payment …
Cover it with a breathable cotton or other piece of cloth and a rubber band to keep fruit flies and any debris. This will allow the process to begin. It has to breathe because again, it’s a living being and you have to keep cultures alive until it ferments.
Stored in a dark place, kombucha likes a warmer climate of 72-80 degrees Fahrenheit. June is warmer around 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit, keep me in the same room, usually I know June is going to be a week or so versus 2 weeks for kombucha. You can buy moderate stickers on the side but once you do this a few times, you just learn how to measure the process.
Fear not if you see Scooby sideways. You’re going to have a baby every time too, which is pretty cool! It’s hard for it to grow mold and hard to make your own kombucha. You just have to be patient and let it do its job.
It is not always a pretty looking process. To be honest, it feels like a weird science experiment.
The great thing is that it is fat-free! Kombucha tea also contains acetic acid, lactic acid, and the good bacteria. Sugars and caffeine are also eaten by Scooby.
HOW TO STORE YOUR SKOOPY AND ENJOY YOUR KOMBUCHA
After the tea has finished brewing, strain out Scooby and other pieces of Scooby and transfer to an airtight container. I use Glass bottles with pop-up lids.
You can add your flavor at this point. I like kombucha and gin the best but sometimes I will add dried chamomile or lavender. Some people like kombucha, fruit-flavored john or vanilla beans can also be good.
You can make detox tea with turmeric, chili, apple cider vinegar, and ginger root. Whatever you add, let it sit for a few more days. This will add bubbles and carbonization. You will need to burp the bowl daily. What this means is letting the air out or else you get a lot of gas build-up. I do this over the course of several days. Then I filter the chunks of flavor I added and then put them in the fridge. Once cooled, it is ready to drink.
Sometimes I add flavors afterward to make a delicious mocktail. I will pour a fresh cup and add fresh slices of jalapeno, mint or basil for an interesting drink. The sky is the limit …
Kombucha & jun is made from a living organism and is great for helping cleanse the bowels and detoxify the body.
As I mentioned earlier, add your Scooby to a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Add 2 cups of the brewing you do each time to get a “splash tea”. This will help you get every new match you play faster.
You’ll make a Scooby kid when you brew, every time. So exciting that you created life! You can give scoopsy to friends and family, you can mix and place them with your dog’s food or put them in plants to feed them as well.
Before handling Scooby, wash your hands thoroughly. I put apple cider vinegar on my hands so I don’t kill or destroy the good bacteria.
So here’s how to make a delicious drink!
The only thing I don’t like is wasting it, so I’ll, of course, leave you with the skin care recipe for your own.
DIY Scooby face mask:
Scooby is very good for the skin. It acts as a natural astringent so it resembles a gentle kombucha peel, removing dead skin cells and leaving the skin feeling soft and smooth. At the same time, it is gentle on the skin.
So, take your SCOBY which is no longer good for making kombucha (when it’s too dark brown). It can be difficult to get rid of them after you have nurtured, fed and raised them, but when the time is right, the time is right.
Mix Scooby with CactusesAnd the Vitamin E. & Some Almond oil To help bind it. You can also use a small amount of Rose water. I personally love to add Kaolin clay To it or even a little of it Activated charcoal To cleanse pores more deeply. The pH will create a slight acidic peel that removes dead skin and the cellulose structure creates nanocomposites that help fill in fine lines and wrinkles on the skin.
You can do the whole body, but it’s like eating baby food that is chunky on your skin but is so good for your skin that it makes you look refreshed as it regenerates skin cells. It’s a nice, low-pH balance.
Enjoy this little DIY from NoSH BoDY and have fun with kombucha!
