Israel has been under intense missile strikes from Gaza since 6:00 pm on Monday. Hamas opened a barrage of seven rockets fired at the hills of Jerusalem, west of the capital, and one directly hit a house in Kiryat Anafim, although no one was injured. In the following hours, dozens of rockets were fired at Israeli towns surrounding Gaza, including Ashkelon, lightly wounding one person, when a vehicle was hit directly by an anti-tank missile. Lessons will be canceled in all schools in Israel tomorrow, within a 40-kilometer radius of Gaza. In response to the rocket fire, the Israeli Air Force has been attacking Hamas and Islamic Jihad targets in Gaza, with reports of at least three Palestinians killed. The attacks come after a week of tension in Jerusalem, with clashes on the Temple Mount between Palestinian protesters and Israeli police, and demonstrations against the possible eviction of Palestinians from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah, following a petition by Jewish groups regarding these homes. Of Jews before 1948. Hamas had threatened to attack Jerusalem at 6 pm, unless the Israeli police had evacuated the Temple Mount. But despite the absence of Israeli police on the Temple Mount, and the cancellation of the flag march through the Old City to celebrate Jerusalem Day, Hamas is still attacking the Jerusalem area with rockets. The assumption is that neither Israel nor Hamas is interested in a full-blown conflict, and that Hamas has scored a major achievement in the eyes of Palestinian public opinion, by positioning itself as the defender of Jerusalem. But while the latest round of rocket fire in Gaza and the Israeli air response are expected to last only a few days before brokering a ceasefire, such positions have escalated in the past into more violent fighting than the two sides had planned.
