The 2021 Liga MX Apertura season will run until November 7. The top 12 teams will qualify for the Liga MX qualifiers, also known as liguilla. Cruz Azul is the defending champion and favorite entering the new season with most of the team back. Other contenders include big-spending teams Club America, CF Monterrey and Tigres UANL. Notable clubs such as Mexico City’s Pumas UNAM and Guadalajara’s Chivas are hoping to join this group, as do the clubs that always find themselves in the supplement mix: Toluca, Leon, Pachuca and Santos Laguna. A surprise team or two should also appear that Club Tijuana, Puebla and Atlas hope they can build on strong campaigns and reach the final. Among the long shots, all eyes will be on FC Juarez, who is beginning a new era under new coach Ricardo “Toca” Ferretti, who previously turned Tigres into a permanent force.
