It was the culmination of months of tensions since Muhyiddin took office in March 2020, after setting out to bring down the reformist government that won the 2018 elections. His Bersatu party joined the United Malays National Organization, which was ousted in the 2018 elections, and others to form a new government. But the alliance is unstable with a slim majority in Parliament and UMNO members are not satisfied with playing the role of second fiddle to Bersatu.
