The group stage of the 2021 Olympic Women’s Soccer Tournament will see eight teams survive and qualify for the quarter-finals, keeping their dreams of winning a gold medal in Tokyo. The 12 nations competing for Olympic glory were divided into three groups of four teams each, called the EG groups to avoid confusion with the men’s championship groups. The two first-placed leaders automatically earn a berth in the quarter and will be joined by the two best third-placed teams to round out the elite group of eight. How the Women’s Olympic Football Group Stage works: The four opponents in each group will face off in a classic robin league format over three days: July 21, July 24 and July 27, with teams earning three points for a win, one point for a draw and none for a loss. WATCH: Women’s Olympic soccer matches on fuboTV At the end of the final round on July 27, the final standings will determine the fate of each team. Centering in the group will either lock the team into a specific quarter-final match, or send some countries packing an early flight home. If the teams are equal on points, the predetermined tiebreaker is used one by one until all ties are broken. If there is still a dead end between two or more teams after the sixth tiebreak, FIFA will draw (for example, pulling a name from a hat). Here is the tie-break standings, as detailed in the official rules of the tournament: superior goal difference in all group matches, most goals scored in all group matches, most points obtained in group matches between tied teams, superior goal difference in group matches between teams Drawn, most goals scored in all group matches between tied teams Best conduct score based on yellow/red cards received in all group matches Drawing of the draw by FIFAT The top two third-placed teams are determined based on tie-breaking mechanics, despite number-breaking numbers 3-5 draw. Not applicable for obvious reasons.
