President Rivlin assigns Netanyahu to form a government

Rivlin: The job of the Knesset is to decide on the ethical issue and whether a candidate with an indictment can form a government. President Reuven Rivlin announced that he had asked the incumbent Prime Minister and Likud Leader Benjamin Netanyahu to form the next government. Netanyahu was given 28 days to form a coalition, with the option to ask Rivlin for a 14-day extension. Rivlin did not invite Netanyahu to the president’s residence in Jerusalem to formally receive the mandate. Rivlin said in his decision: “After transparent consultations, I get the impression that no one at this stage has a chance to form a government. The decision to assign the candidate an indictment is subject to a difficult public dispute. The president of the state is not a substitute for Parliament or the court. “Whether a candidate before an indictment can form a government, I decided to assign Netanyahu the task of forming a government. This decision was not easy for me, from a moral or ethical point of view.” Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid said, “The president fulfilled his duty and had no choice, but handing over the mandate to Netanyahu is a sign of shame that tarnishes Israel and impedes our status as a law-abiding country.” Yesterday, President Rivlin completed his consultations with the leaders of the Knesset parties, with 52 Knesset members recommending Netanyahu and 45 members recommending Lapid. Yamina recommended party leader Naftali Bennett and New Hope to Gideon Sa’ar, and the two Arab parties did not recommend anyone.
