Relocation Stress: How Can You Handle It


Despite good preparation, moving can cause a lot of stress, especially if you move to a foreign environment. Children and young people in particular can get upset by a move, especially if it happens more often.

Many factors contribute to the stress of a move. Looking for a house and possibly selling your own house can be time consuming in itself. Moreover, all too often a purchase is canceled at the last minute, so that you can start all over again.

  • Reserve one day a week to look at houses and make arrangements in advance so that you can make the most of your time;
  • Don’t waste time looking at homes that you know in advance are out of budget;

Preparing for the move

Be energetic and don’t let sentiments guide you: sell household goods that you will never use or will no longer need, or give it away, for example to a charity. You can also start packing things that you don’t often need, at least not before the move.
  • Make a clear list of what is in which box; Write clearly and visibly on the moving boxes what is inside. Sort the boxes with important things that you want to have at hand after the move (the coffee maker, toiletries, medicines);
  • If you have young children, it is best to provide a babysitter during the move;
  • If you have pets, arrange transport for them. Keep in mind that moving house is also stressful for pets – the vet may be able to prescribe a sedative;
  • Have a cleaning service clean the empty house. A mover can usually also take care of this

Children who move frequently are at increased risk of problems at school. With every move to a different environment, the child has to get used to new classmates and perhaps also to a different learning program. As a result, they may be ahead in some subjects and lag behind in others. The latter can be very stressful.
