The Israeli-Egyptian borders to the Sinai were reopened in Taba, south of Eilat, this morning. After more than a year, Israeli vacationers can spend time in the Sinai relaxing on the Red Sea coast. The borders are open only to Israelis who have a vaccination certificate or a certificate of recovery, so children under 16 years old cannot travel to the Sinai. In addition, Egypt requires all visitors to submit a negative Covid-19 test from the last 72 hours. Holders of foreign passports must obtain a permit from the Exceptions Committee. Cars cannot be taken to Sinai. Not everyone who hopes to enjoy the Sinai will be able to do so. There will be a daily quota of maximum 300 people in each direction each day. By 10 am this morning, half of today’s class had already traveled to Sinai. Israelis wishing to visit the Egyptian Peninsula must book in advance on the Israel Airports Authority website, indicating the date of departure and return, and pay a fee of 101 shekels per person. The borders are open from Sunday to Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm. All Israelis returning home, including those who have been vaccinated or have recovered, must present a negative test at the Taba border from the previous 72 hours. There are four points in Sinai where tests can be conducted for $ 20: in Nuweiba, Al-Tor, and Sharm El-Sheikh hospitals, and the fourth is supposed to open in the next few days near the Taba border crossing itself. However, Israelis who return to their homes with a certificate of vaccination or recovery are exempt from isolation. The current daily ration applies until April 12, after which the number can be increased. The Ministry of Health preferred to keep the borders closed, but the government authorized the High Court of Justice, which ruled that there was no justification for sealing off the borders of Israel. Aside from health concerns, we must also remember that Israel issued a severe security warning advising people not to travel to Sinai.
