Earlier in the day, Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit said the cabinet vote to appoint Netanyahu’s colleague in Likud as justice minister was illegal. The Israeli High Court of Justice suspended Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud colleague Ofir Akunis as Minister of Justice. The Supreme Court granted Netanyahu’s lawyer until 3:30 pm tomorrow to justify the appointment. Earlier in the day, Attorney General Avishai Mandelblit dismissed Akunis as illegal, for violating the coalition agreement with Blue and White chief Benny Gantz. Mandelblit asked the High Court of Justice to issue an interim order suspending Akunis’ appointment, which she agreed to. Gantz had expected to be appointed justice minister himself today, but the cabinet rejected his nomination by 10-17. Immediately after the vote, Netanyahu asked the cabinet to vote for Likud’s Ofir Akunis as Minister of Justice, which she did.
