The National Civilian Research and Development Council, which operates under the National Research and Development Council Act, renews its activity with the appointment of thirteen new members. Last week, the government accepted the proposal of Science and Technology Minister Orit Farkash-Hacohen, and appointed the new members of the council. Each member is appointed for a term of four years, but in fact, in the past five years, no new members have been appointed despite the appointment of a new president, the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology President Professor Peretz Lavi, in November 2020. The council is meant to serve as The strategic thinking arm of the government. Its mission is to identify the needs of research and development activity in Israel and to identify its strengths and weaknesses. It makes recommendations on national policy in research and development, and conducts surveys on the state of science and research in Israel with the aim of achieving national goals. It deals with government R&D, research and development in research institutes, aerospace, internet, life sciences, etc. New members of the council are Professor Joseph Kost, Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Prof. Avinoam Zadok from the Faculty of Engineering at Bar Ilan University. Prof. Avi Schroeder from the Faculty of Chemical Engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology; Professor Liat Ayalon from Bar Ilan University School of Social Work; Prof. Karen Avraham from the Department of Human Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry and Vice Dean for Preclinical Affairs at the Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University; Emad Younes, President of Neuroscience Technology, Alpha Omega Engineering Ltd. Eric Kleinstein, co-founder and managing partner of venture capital firm Glilot Capital Partners; Aharon Aharon, former CEO of the Israel Innovation Authority; Itai Gavrieli, Senior Researcher at the Israel Geological Survey. Prof. Mina Tescher, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Bar Ilan University and former Chief Scientist at the Ministry of Science and Technology; Professor Danny Steenberg, Researcher in Plant Protection, Plant Pathology and Weed Research at the Agricultural Research Organization (Vulcani Institute); Prof. Dan Peled, former professor at the University of Haifa School of Economics; and Eytan Eshel, Vice President of EW and SIGINT at Elbit Systems and former head of the Defense Research and Development Directorate at the Department of Defense.
