Umpire Marty Foster makes a terrible interference call during a Marlins-Brewers match

The most mind-boggling call of the 2021 season occurred Wednesday afternoon in the second half of the Marlins Brewers match in Milwaukee, and referee Marty Foster has some explanation. With one knockout and Marlins second and third, Baseman II Isan Diaz hit a heavy blow down the first baseline. Brewers’ Zach Godley ran, sent the ball into the grass, then tricked it over to Daniel Vogelbach. Simple and well-defended gameplay. Easy out. Godley’s shot beat Diaz to base by a wide margin. Corey Dickerson, who was on third base, jogged home with a tour that put Marlins ahead 1-0. More than that: MLB should only allow relationships instead of extra silliness and then … “Wait a minute,” said Brewers’ playboy Brian Anderson. “They’ll call him safe at first.” Wait, what? Foster referred to Diaz twice, then raised his hands to indicate that the play was dead and that Diaz was safe. “I have no idea,” Anderson said, echoing the subtle sentiments of anyone watching the play live or on Twitter in the minutes and hours afterward, “why would he be called up safely in such a situation.” take care for yourself. Diaz was called safe, apparently, because Foster judged that Godley had entered his way onto first base. This decision was made even though Godley never left the lawn or stepped onto the baseline dirt. It was made even though Godley’s throw was from his right hand while Diaz was still three paces from the shooter and the ball was safely in Vogelbach’s glove four paces before Diaz reached the base, and Milwaukee coach Craig Consil walked out to argue, but was rejected. A few rounds later – after everyone in the bunker saw the replays and confirmed what the awful call was like – Brewers First Base coach Pat Murphy was fired by Foster and Counsell had to tie him down. Diaz should have been the second. Instead, there was only one. Godley hit Chad Wallach for what should have been the final of the first round. That was not the case, and the runner scored in the third base the second half of the match with a pass while archer Sandy Alcantara was on the board. Very bad. Just an awful call. Unforgivable. Update: Foster didn’t hold back his terrible call, which was officially a fouling, after the match. “A player without a ball, without playing on the ball, stands in the main path of the runner, hobbling and blocking him. (Diaz) is actually running to the right to get out of his way, to get,” Foster told a billiard reporter. “The aisle has nothing to do with this play”) and that Vogelbach was stepping on the bag with the ball (“It might have been around the same time.”) Full exchange, via Adam McCalvy of MLB.com: Here’s more a billiard report with referee Marty Foster explaining his call at Marlins-Brewers game today: pic .twitter.com/u3jZ6t4Nm2 – Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) April 28, 2021
