US documents solve the mystery of the remains of the Togolese war criminal

It was a tense and top-secret mission, as US officials apparently took extreme steps aimed at keeping Togo’s remains, and the remains of six others executed with him, away from the ultra-nationalists looking to glorify them as martyrs. The seven were hanged for war crimes just before Christmas 1948, three years after Japan’s defeat.
