What Is Sustainable Roofing Material

0

Roofing is one of the costly projects that you need to face. So, expensive projects need to be durable and long-lasting for our profits. Sustainability in roofing materials makes the roofing more energetically efficient. Indeed, no materials are forever sustainable. But you need to choose a high rate of sustainable materials to avoid more loss in the future.

What are Sustainable Materials for Roofing?

The materials which are made from earth or fossil are not sustainable. Sustainability indicates the raw materials which are not made by damaging its sources.

Comparison Among Roofing Material Sustainability

  1. Metal Roofing

Metal roofs are energy producers. Metal roofing has energy efficiency. Metal contains recycling elements. They can be recycled at the end of the use. Metal roofs can also reflect some heat as well as absorb some of them. Metals are from earth. In roofing, steel & aluminum are being used most of the time. So, technically they are not sustainable.

  • Slate Roofing

Slate roofing makes your house beautiful. Slate is for luxurious home improvement. Slate is heavy and costly. It comes from mining. It needs resources to mine the stone. It needs processing and transportation costs. So, it is not a sustainable material. Besides, slate roofing also requires additional resources and farming roofing.

  • Tile Roofing

Terracotta tile is fried clay. Terracotta tile is heavyweight and durable. Clay tile comes from pure clay, and then it turns into fried clay. Sometimes some terracotta tile gets paint polishing, or it needs some additional properties to increase the glaze. You can use terracotta as a resource for other materials. So, the manufacturers love to say that terracotta tile is sustainable.

  • Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are a composition of Petroleum-based products, fiberglass, tar, paper, etc. Asphalt shingles are good for heat reflectivity. Asphalt shingles use minerals as an element. Old shingles were not able for recycling. However, they were not biodegradable. As asphalt shingles use petroleum-based products as composition, that’s why asphalt shingles are not sustainable.

  • Concrete Tiles

Concrete tiles use portland cement to make. Concrete tiles are heavy. But, concrete tile is lighter than slate. They are intensive to heat. Concrete tiles produce energy efficiency. It emits a significant amountof carbon-di-oxide which is the cause of the greenhouse effect. Concrete tiles need additional framing to use in roofs. Cement is an industrial material. It is produced with chemical compositions.

When the roof surface is covered by greenery materials like vegetation, grass, or small plants, the roof is called a green roof. A green roof has a waterproof membrane. A green roof is sensitive. It needs high maintenance to keep it long-lasting. And it is also expensive to install. Green roofs are beneficial for highly tempted areas. The waterproof membrane that the green roof uses is made from a petroleum base. So, a green roof is no longer sustainable.
