Where the magic of Tata Harper happens

Tata Harper is known for most of the manufacturing of clean, all-natural skincare on her Vermont farm, where she also lived until recently. When the single mother and her family moved south to Connecticut (the farm is as busy as ever making produce, and the family still resides there often), she set out to decorate her new space—with particular attention to the intentionally sprawling bathroom area. “I have a home office in another part of the house,” she says. “But this is where the real search continues!”

It’s a private space, accessed through Harper’s bedroom and filled with light from the massive windows and trees outside. “Natural light is important, and so is the feeling of being connected to nature,” she says. Harper defined the spaces according to her routine, so there is a great sense of comfort throughout. “Although it serves me as a tester, this is the place to stop,” she says. “I really relax here, and I get my best thoughts when I’m in this state.”

Starts in the shower with a hair routine

Like many of us, Harper says her best ideas come when she’s in the shower, a large booth filled with Grown Alchemist and Sangre de Fruta hair products (there’s a tub of sticky scalpel, too) right behind the window—a circular bath and meditation area. “When I’m more relaxed, I can solve many problems,” she says.

Best way to shower: Superkind

One of Harper’s best ideas lately has been a sensitive skin line full of active ingredients, called Superkind. “A lot of what is offered to reactive skin is about what it is Not In it,” she explains. “Superkind is all about amazing ingredients that really work—whether you have sensitive skin or not. Skincare dream wash

A lot of skincare – Tata Harper’s current and future dermatological miracles – lies along the double trough area. “All the cleansing, exfoliation, and experimentation takes place here,” she says. “There’s a big mirror, some hair ties – you can just give yourself the full treatment.”

“In the morning, I always exfoliate my skin with a rejuvenating cleanser,” Harper says. “When you wake up, you have a buildup of skin cells from the night, because during the night, your organs – including your skin – are reset and regenerated. Old cells die, and new ones are born. I like to take off all the dead skin cells.”

“At night, I like double-cleansing. I remove SPF, dirt, and traces of makeup with my oil cleanser, and for a second cleanse, I go deeper with our purifying cleanser, our detox mask,” she says.

Bathing and meditation

The center of the space is a large bathtub surrounded by windows and facing a sumptuous area for contemplation. Once out of the shower, Harper often lands here afterward. “I was obsessed with this Italian meditation chair and then ended up putting a small table near it, so I use it for meditation and also to experiment or work with the product,” she says. She bundles bath oils, body creams, and an ultra-hydrating face mask next to the tub: “I love a relaxing bath,” she says.

Treat your skin during the day too

Harper uses the table on her chair meditation for the midday routine she started during the pandemic. “I do this right after lunch, and it’s like picking out,” she says. “Instead of having coffee or something like that, I sit down and apply an essence like our Brightening Essence or a tonic like Viscose. Then I apply our restorative eye cream and add a few drops of Retinoic Face Oil.”

The persistently charming vanity

On one side is the vanity area, where Harper likes to put on various serums and skin creams, as well as her famous lip and cheek tints, and if she’s going out, put on a little makeup. “I’ve always had a separate area different from the pelvis,” she says. “So did my mum and grandmother. I think it’s important to have a place separate from the area where you wash your hands and brush your teeth where you can sit in a nice chair and do your skincare routine. It’s comfortable.”

Take great care of your skin

This rose-infused mist smells like a meadow full of flowers, feels incredible on the skin, and deeply moisturizes. It’s especially good to spray right before a serum or moisturizer, but we love it anytime, especially after a very long session in front of the computer.
